JOB SUMMARY:
The Medical Physicist overseas all the physics practice in the Oncology Hospital. This includes radiation protection, Physics practice QA program, dosimetry, treatment planning, commissioning of new equipment and training of other staff. The scope of the job function involves a central role in providing technical assistance in the development of treatment plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy, implementing new technology in the clinic, maintaining established policies, procedures, objectives, quality measurement, and safety. The medical physics team is involved in teaching and advising other staff on new equipment
developments and techniques and performs clinical research if interested.
The Medical Physicist is responsible for the regular monitoring of the radiation equipment to ensure correct and consistent results or outputs are achieved. Ensuring ongoing maintenance routine is followed. Commissioning new or upgraded equipment to achieve compatibility with existing machines. Training and advising technical staff (radiation protection technicians and supervisors and physicists) on new equipment and protocols. Lecturing and training other medical professionals such as physicians, residents, graduate students, medical students, technologists and nurses. Negotiating and agreeing changes to their diagnosis techniques in the light of new procedures. Researching new equipment
development and techniques, assessing the impact on existing local practice and compiling reports to initiate changes. Acting as on-call duty physicist to respond to problems, provide advice and technical assistance. Updating knowledge of health and safety legislation and procedures. Undertaking audit visits to departments to check compliance with health and safety legislation, this includes Cleaning, waste management and radiation detection advice. Advises and consults with physicians in such applications as use of ionizing radiation in diagnosis, therapy, treatment planning with externally delivered radiation as well as use of internally implanted radioactive sources. Complete subject of x-ray equipment, calibration, and dosimetry, medical uses of ultrasound and infrared, bioelectrical investigation of brain and heart, mathematical analysis and applications of computers in medicine. Formulation of radiation protection guides and procedures specific to the hospital environment. Conducts research in development of diagnostic and remedial procedures and develops instrumentation for specific medical applications. Complies with policies and procedures; and in particular infection control, safety and quality management. Performs other duties as requested.
Skills:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum: Postgraduate degree in Medical Physics with 3 years plus experience in Medical Physics Radiology Oncology.
Preferred: Doctorate on Medical Physics with Radiation Oncology Speciality.
OTHER SKILLS:
High standard of English (written and verbal) essential. Advanced computer skills needed. The employee needs to be able to work with and communicate effectively with a wide range of people. The employee needs to be able to communicate complex scientific principles to staff of all levels of training and experience in an understandable way. Major staff groups include: Radiation Oncologist, Radiologist, Radiographers, X-ray Technicians/Technologist, Doctors, Nurses, and Service Engineers from equipment manufactures.
